Architectural / Civil Engineering Technology (A.A.S.)
Building design and construction requires a professional who understands the total project and its unique conditions. The Architectural/ Civil Engineering Technology (ACT) program will teach students the basic facets of this complex field.
Students learn the field through courses in Architecture Design, Structural Design and Construction Technology. The curriculum also stresses Computer Aided Design, materials and methods of construction, and building codes. Advanced courses present opportunities to solve complex technical problems. Mathematics, the physical and applied sciences, project management, and basic communication skills are fundamental elements in this program.
Graduates are qualified for career-entry positions in Architectural/Civil and Construction Engineering Technology including:
- Architectural and structural designer or drafter
- CAD operator
- Cost estimator
- Survey crew member
- Sales engineer
Students will receive specialized knowledge in architectural design, structural design, or construction engineering.
Architectural / Civil Engineering Technology graduates are able to:
- Prepare:
- Freehand three-dimensional sketches.
- Measured drawings of existing structures.
- Complete a set of architectural or structural working drawings including floor plans, elevations, details and schedules using CAD applications.
- Read and interpret architectural, structural and site plans demonstrating a knowledge of symbols and systems.
- Perform field inspections.
- Use surveying equipment for basic construction tasks.
- Draw a "free-body" diagram of any structure, or part of a structure.
- Demonstrate knowledge of federal and local code and strands of
safety, including those authorized by the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA). - Use CAD to produce a 3-D wire frame.
