Allied Health Technology/Pre-Nursing Track (A.S.)
The purpose of the pre-nursing program is to prepare students for the extremely rigorous practical nursing program as well as other courses in the College’s allied health areas. Students who enroll in this program have the opportunity to earn an associate degree as well as nationwide certifications and licenses in the health care field. The pre-nursing program as well as an allied health or practical nursing track must be completed in order to obtain an associate degree.
In this associate degree program, students gain essential knowledge in English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, and in other academic areas. This program provides students with important skills that will help them be more successful in nursing and allied health careers.
Objectives
- To train students in the cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and communication skills needed to provide nursing care.
- Using clinical experiences to complement theory learned in the classroom.
- Enables students the opportunity to compete for admission to the highly competitive Practical Nursing program to continue their education.
Pre-Nursing graduates will be able to:
- Gain skills essential for success in time and stress management, leadership, problem solving, team building, behavioral management and strengthening interpersonal relationships.
- Possess an advanced knowledge and skill set in biology and chemistry.
- Understand medical terminology, fundamental nursing skills, nutrition, and human growth and development.
- Know the scope of practice of the Licensed Practical Nurse as defined by Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, as well as the standards of practice including legal and ethical issues.
- Know the latest health trends and issues.
